According [to this](http://www.china.org.cn/travel/gallery/2008-12/18/content_16971334.htm), the bamboo stick dance is traditional to the Li people of the Hainan province of South China. [According to this](https://www.chinaculturetour.com/sanya/da-chai-dance-li-nationality.htm) it comes from a funeral custom, while being a joyous and symbolic group activity.

Would love to know more!
